ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL CONGRATULATES DR. JOHN MATHIAS ON HIS RETIREMENT
St. Joseph’s Hospital congratulates John Mathias, MD on his many years of service as he retires from medical practice. “Dr. Mathias has been a mainstay in this community. His dedication to St. Joseph’s Hospital has served as a sustaining force to this organization,” said Sue Johnson-Phillippe, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital. “I believe he is an unsung hero to our hospital and to his patients. We wish him the best as he enters retirement. He will be missed.”
Sister Francesca Lowis, Vice President of Mission Integration said “Dr. Mathias has been a valuable asset to the community and to St. Joseph’s. I have heard patients “sing his praises” over and over again. In the name of the Pallottine Sisters I want to thank him and wish him God’s blessing during his well-deserved retirement.”
St. Joseph’s Chief of Staff J. Michael Rollins, MD, said “Dr. Mathias was not only loved by his patients, but was held in high regard by his colleagues. He also served as an outstanding example for the many young physicians and medical students who spent time at St. Joseph’s Hospital.”
Dr. Mathias received his medical degree from West Virginia University in 1970 and performed his residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. He then went to Homestead Air Force base in Florida where he was a major with the Family Practice pilot program. In 1975 he came to Buckhannon and opened up a medical practice focusing on Family Medicine with an emphasis on preventative care. He joined the staff of the Physicians of St. Joseph’s in 1998.
He has served as President of St. Joseph’s Hospital Medical staff, Medical Director for the Upshur County Emergency Squad, and President of the Central West Virginia Medical Society and the Upshur County Medical Association Council.
Over the past 37 years, he has provided the best in health care to families throughout Upshur County and the surrounding areas.
